What is the Nine News Junior Cadet Competition?
The Nine News Junior Cadet competition is a search for the champion junior news cadets in south-east Queensland. Students across south-east Queensland in grades 6, 7, 8 & 9 are invited to enter the Nine News Junior Cadet competition and vie to be the number one Nine News Junior Cadet in years 6&7 or years 8&9.
Students can select from four news cadet categories – Nine News Presenter, Nine News Sports Reporter, Nine News Weather Presenter and Nine News Reporter. Contestants will be required to present a piece to camera just like the Nine News Team representative of the category they have chosen.
Five regional competitions will be held in major shopping centres throughout south-east Queensland with the grand final event taking place in the Brisbane city.
Who is eligible to enter?
Entries will be accepted from students who are in years 6, 7, 8 or 9 during 2008 and attend a school within south-east Queensland. The school must also be within Channel Nine Queensland's viewer area. Students will be broken into two age divisions - Years 6 & 7 and years 8 & 9. The two divisions will compete against each other in the regional finals and grand final.
How to enter?
Entry is simple! Fill out the online entry form here. Places are limited to 80 contestants for each region. You must enter in the regional competition being held closest to your school. You will then be required to prepare for the competition by writing a script in your chosen category.
How does the competition work?
After entering students will be required to write your own script 15 to 20 seconds in duration, you can get help from your teacher or parents. Also you can check out the Competition Tips section of the website where you will find ideas and sample scripts to assist.
At the regional competitions each contestant will present their script to camera on stage. When presenting you will be standing in front of a green screen which will have a background relating to your category added to in by the Channel Nine crew at the competition.
A panel of judges will score each contestant on presentation and delivery of their piece to camera. At the end of each competition event eight regional finalists will be announced – one for each of the four categories in each age division.

These regional finalists will all go on to compete in the Grand Final and vie for the title of Nine News Junior Cadet Champion in their age division and win $5000 for their school and $250 worth of prizes for themselves plus a Champions Trophy.
